What are some themes that can be identified from the short story Victoria and Her Kimono? Do you think the themes have something to do with your personally.
The themes that can be identified from the short story ‘Victoria and Her Kimono’ is about culture. In the story Victoria love her culture and proud to be Indian people. She always protect her own culture when Ramanan always arguing about that. She also loves Tamil film. However, Ramanan also an Indian people but he always proud to be western. In addition, he also so obsessive with Queen Victoria and he called his wife Victoria even though people called Vickneswari as Vicki for short. Besides, Ramanan also eat using spoon and fork even though everyone eats using their hand. This shows that Ramanan is too proud of other culture rather than his own culture.
Love to family is also the theme in this short story. Loving to family can see in this short story towards Victoria because she loves her family. Victoria takes care of her children and also be a good mother. She also never disregard of her children. Victoria will bring her children to watch the movie together and do not let her children alone. Victoria also loves her husband even though her husband was not appreciating her. She was safe her husband from Japanese military when they are looking for her husband because her husband teach English. She told the Japanese military that her husband not at home. Even though her husband is hot tempered but she just be patient with her husband.
The other themes in this story are westernizing. In this story Ramanan choose to be westernization and also didn’t like Indian people even though he is also an Indian people. Ramanan didn’t like watch Tamil movie but his wife love to watch tamil movie. The way of his life is also more to westernization rather than Indian. He is teaching English and also can speak English fluently. The way he eat also different with his wife which is he eat using spoon and fork. He also too obsess with Queen of British who is Queen Victoria but didn’t proud of his own. Ramanan is different with her wife which is more to Indian.
I think these themes have something to do with my personally. Malaysian is a multi racial country and has different kind of people. Even though Malaysia has different races and culture but I’m so proud to be as a Malaysian and never be apart of others culture. We don’t have to be westernized but just be our own because we are the one who can develop our culture. I also love my family because are important people towards me. They are always be my side rather other people. We must love our family because they are apart of us and whose are close to us.
